Sony is pulling the plug on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) this week after the device being on the market for the past 10 years
Say goodbye to the Sony PSPThe PSP went through several iterations and changes in that time, becoming sleeker and lighter, and sporting a few limited edition covers and styles. In its prime it contested hotly with the Nintendo DS, before sales began to slow down. This prompted Sony to release the PlayStation Vita, a more powerful successor to the PSP which included touch controls and better performance.
PSP shipments in North America were stopped back in January, while later this month they will be stopped in Japan, with Europe following suit later this year. As of 2012, over 76 million units of the PSP have been sold, but in a market that is ripe with smartphone and tablet gaming, the PSP and perhaps other hand-held gaming devices are skating on thin ice.
